In her autobiographical documentary, Daniela Magnani Hüller revisits a traumatic act of violence. Fourteen years ago, when she was in high school, she was repeatedly stabbed by a male classmate and survived this attempted murder. Despite ongoing harassment, death threats, and even social media messages used as evidence, neither the school nor the police were able to prevent this attempted femicide.
On camera, the director speaks with a former classmate, a teacher, a police officer, a doctor, and a prosecutor—all individuals involved in the case at the time. The interviews mostly take place in large, empty spaces: not the exact high school she attended in Munich years ago, but a similar one. As she speaks with the participants, Hüller deliberately maintains a distance, calmly trying to understand why they acted as they did fourteen years earlier.
Sometimes, I Imagine Them All at a Party examines how the justice system operates, where it fails to adequately support victims of violence, and whether this can be changed.
