’A Santanotte is one of the rare surviving works by Elvira Notari, Italian cinema’s first woman director. Inspired by the popular song of the same name by Francesco Buongiovanni and Eduardo Scala, the film brings poverty and violence against women to the screen through melodrama. Nanninella is a young woman forced to support her persistently abusive father on the small wage she earns as a waitress. One day, she falls in love with an honest man named Tore, but their love, too, will suffer from the harsh realities of life in Naples.
