After Hours, which won Martin Scorsese the “Best Director” award at the 1986 Cannes Film Festival, tells the story of Paul Hackett, who lives a simple life in New York, and his night that begins when he goes to SoHo to meet a mysterious woman he met at a cafe and gradually spirals into a dead end. Lost in a night filled with strange characters, misunderstandings, and a series of misfortunes, Paul wins the audience’s sympathy as he becomes the victim of every path he tries to take to get home.

Scorsese blends elements of absurd comedy and suspense to explore the midnight atmosphere of New York streets and the alienation of modern life, infusing the entire film with a sense of strangeness.
