Inspired by Joseph Conrad’s novel Heart of Darkness, Apocalypse Now tells the story of an officer tasked with finding Colonel Kurtz, who is presumed to have abandoned his post and lost his sanity amid the chaos of the Vietnam War, as he travels down the Mekong River. In this masterpiece, where Coppola confronts the destructiveness of war with the fragility of human psychology, actors such as Martin Sheen, Marlon Brando, Robert Duvall, Frederic Forrest, Laurence Fishburn, Dennis Hopper, and Harrison Ford come together.

The film, which is remembered for the line, “I love the smell of napalm in the morning,” is considered one of the most striking war films for its cinematography and sound design. The film won the Palme d’Or at the 1979 Cannes Film Festival.
