Idealistic playwright Barton Fink, who has achieved success on Broadway, is invited to Los Angeles by Capitol Studios, a major Hollywood production company, to work as a screenwriter. However, when asked to write a B-movie about a wrestler, rather than his usual powerful narratives about ordinary people’s lives, writing becomes far from easy for him.
His hotel neighbor Charlie Meadows (John Goodman) patiently listens to his writer’s complaints and rants, but he also has stories to tell. Yet Barton, immersed in his creative crisis and arrogance in his dingy hotel room, finds his mind increasingly unsettled by the oppressive heat and strange noises coming from the walls.

The Coen brothers’ film, which addresses how business relationships in Hollywood can turn into exploitation for writers, also contains elements that will occupy the audience’s mind with its criticism of fascism and militarism. Barton Fink not only earned the Coen brothers the “Best Film” and “Best Director” awards at the Cannes Film Festival, but also secured John Turturro the “Best Actor” award for his magnificent performance.
