Adapted from Charles Bennett’s play of the same title, Blackmail was made during the transitional period from silent to sound cinema. A later version of the film, created by reshooting certain scenes with sound, is recognized as both Britain’s and Hitchcock’s first sound film. The print screened within the program is the original version, shot entirely as a silent film.

Alice, whose relationship with her police-officer boyfriend Frank has been strained for some time, is drawn to another man. After an argument with Frank, she goes to the studio of this flirtatious and unsettling painter. Following the events of that night, not only Alice and Frank’s relationship but their lives are drawn into an escalating web of suspense—especially since there is another witness to what has taken place.

Known for giving himself small roles in nearly all of his films, Hitchcock appears here as a passenger reading a newspaper on the subway, momentarily distracted by a small child.
