Nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, Camila is one of the key works of Argentina’s transition from military dictatorship to democracy. Shot by María Luisa Bemberg, a pioneer of feminist cinema, despite the junta’s restrictions, the film brings to the screen the true story of Camila O’Gorman, who became a legendary figure among the Argentine people. Following the tragic love affair between Camila, the daughter of a wealthy family, and the Jesuit priest Ladislao under the shadow of dictatorship, Camila became a symbol of the political and feminist awakening in Argentine cinema upon its release, helping to revive the country’s filmmaking and bring it international recognition.
