A story about characters pushed to the margins of society… Directed by Rosa von Praunheim, City of Lost Souls (1983) takes the audience into the vibrant underground world of West Berlin. At the center of the narrative are drag performers Angie Stardust, Tara O’Hara, and others who refuse to live according to patriarchal norms. In a city divided by a wall, they carve out spaces for themselves—on stage, in bars, and in everyday life.
This unconventional rock musical brings together camp, melodrama, and politics, as in many of Rosa von Praunheim’s films. One of the most original and pioneering figures of German cinema, filmmaker and activist Rosa von Praunheim passed away in December 2025 at the age of 83. We remember him with one of his most entertaining works. A document of early 1980s West Berlin subculture, City of Lost Souls was rediscovered years later, becoming a cult film and praised by some critics as an inspiration for Hedwig and the Angry Inch.
