Adapted from Daphne du Maurier’s 1971 short story Don’t Look Now captivates the audience from the very first minute with its opening scene, shot with rare delicacy.

An English couple (Laura and John) travel to Venice at the invitation of the Bishop of Venice to restore a church shortly after the death of their young daughter. In Venice, the couple crosses paths with mysterious sisters, one of whom is blind and claims to be a medium and to have seen their dead daughter. While this claim comforts Laura, it triggers John’s delusions. For John, who is confronting his trauma, this cold and damp city, surrounded on all sides by waterways, will turn into an inescapable nightmare.

The enchanting locations of Venice, which we see as an almost abandoned city, reinforce the film’s gloomy and sinister atmosphere. These extraordinary opportunities offered by Venice’s unique architecture, combined with the mastery of cinematographer Anthony B. Richmond, result in a rare cinematic feast. Indeed, the film was nominated for seven BAFTA awards in 1974 and won the award for “Best Cinematography.”
