Described by Peter Watkins as “my most personal film” and focusing on the 10 years of the famous artist's life, Edvard Munch is one of the most creative biographical films ever made. During a screening of The War Game in 1968, Watkins visited Oslo and felt a deep affinity for Munch's work. He brings Munch's life, which was misunderstood and harshly criticized during his time but ultimately led to groundbreaking work, to the screen in a multi-layered and surprising way.

With its extraordinary narrative structure, Edvard Munch is not limited to the personal. It simultaneously examines Munch's private life, the wages of child laborers in Norway, the pressures women face within the institution of marriage, the debates sparked by Marxist thought in Norway, and China's diplomatic crises. History, politics, and social events are accompanied by voiceovers or interviews. Watkins treats Munch as part of the flow of non-linear history, influenced by political and social forces, within the entirety and diversity of the world.
