Stanley Kubrick’s final film, Eyes Wide Shut, creates a dreamlike atmosphere in 1990s New York while presenting a story built around sexuality, jealousy, and the sense of security. Starring Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, the film explores the fragility of marriage and the labyrinth of the subconscious, woven with dark desires. The uncertainty between day and night, reality and fantasy, intensifies through Kubrick’s meticulous framing and chilling music choices.
Although adapted from Arthur Schnitzler’s Dream Story (1926), in Kubrick’s hands the film becomes a masked ball of modern society. The cold blues and golden reflections in the color palette visualize the tension between physical desire and repressed fears. The unease it evokes in the viewer reveals the fragile foundations not only of a marriage but of all human relationships, leaving the audience on the fine line between dream and reality.
