Futura, a documentary film directed by Alice Rohrwacher, Francesco Munzi, and Pietro Marcello, depicts the outlook of today’s Italian youth toward the future. The film brings together conversations with young people from different backgrounds and contexts, revealing their hopes, dreams, and fears, constrained by the limited opportunities in their communities.

This collective questioning of the future, conveyed through the eyes of three leading directors of contemporary Italian cinema, is supported by classical music and voiceovers featuring the directors’ own interpretations, which enhance the film’s emotional tone. Amidst today’s political, socio-economic, and ecological crises, the film asks, “Is the future already doomed, or is there still room for hope?”

Begun during the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, the film reflects the pandemic’s impact not only in dialogue but also in scenes where social distancing is evident, amplifying these issues.
