Sixteen-year-old Lea is selected for a televised singing competition. As part of the show’s format, all contestants are asked to prepare short videos about their daily lives, answering the question: “Who are you, and what makes you special?” Lea struggles to find a quick answer, setting her on a journey to discover her own identity.
Lea has grown up in a crowded family in the rural East of Germany. Her grandparents are trying to keep the old family hotel running. They have never left East Germany and long for a past that Lea and her cousins find difficult to understand. Lea’s parents have recently separated and argue constantly. She feels closest to her aunt Kati, who is seen within the family as a more independent and intellectual figure. Kati works on an EU project to transform an old factory in the town into a museum. However, her views are not always accepted within the family—especially by her own mother.
With Home Stories, Eva Trobisch presents a film deeply rooted in German history. A strong ensemble cast brings its multi-layered characters to life, while the narrative offers new perspectives on the different realities of German identity.
