Adapted from a story co-written by Jorge Luis Borges and Adolfo Bioy Casares, two of world literature’s major authors, Hugo Santiago’s debut feature Invasion is regarded as one of Argentine cinema’s most important and unconventional films. It follows a group attempting to resist the invasion of the city of Aquileia by unidentified forces. Although widely acclaimed on release, the film was banned ten years later and remained lost for years after its original negatives were stolen during the military dictatorship. In 2004, 35 mm reels obtained from different sources were brought together and restored, returning Invasion to audiences. It remains one of Argentine cinema’s most powerful works on memory, loss and resistance.
