Opening with a scene depicting the horrors of the Vietnam War, the film follows soldier Jacob Singer, who is caught between the brutality of war and post-war daily life. In this film where reality and hallucinations intertwine, we witness a soldier trying to return to life and the delusions of a father who has lost his son. His ex-wife (Sarah), his lover (Jezebel), and his lost son (Gabriel), with their names and roles in the film, seem like characters straight out of Christian mythology, preparing Jacob for the path that will rescue him from this predicament.
While the film focuses on Jacob’s struggle to understand what has happened to him, it simultaneously reconstructs the hell-and-heaven narrative from an anti-war perspective, inviting us to reflect on it.
The reality we experience in the film, edited by Tom Rolf, manages to maintain its mystery until the very end. Jacob’s Ladder takes the audience on a harrowing inner journey through waves of tension and uncertainty, thanks to Tim Robbins’ unforgettable performance as the post-war, mentally shattered Jacob and Maurice Jarre’s haunting score.
* The film contains triggering elements.
