A turning point in Akad’s efforts to convey social realities through a simple, direct cinematic language, Law of the Border centers on the predicament of villagers on Urfa’s border with Syria who make their living through cross-border smuggling. Through the story of Hıdır, played by Yılmaz Güney, the film questions the power of rural landlords, poverty, religious bigotry and the unequal social structures that drive people to crime. Having encountered censorship on three occasions, it is now regarded as one of Turkish cinema’s foremost works. The film earned Yılmaz Güney the Best Actor award at the 1967 Golden Orange Film Festival and returned to audiences at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival following restoration by the World Cinema Project.

* The film contains scenes of violence against animals.
