Considered one of the most important films in Cuban cinema, Memories of Underdevelopment examines the observations of a writer who chooses to remain in Havana—unlike his friends who fled to the United States after the Cuban Revolution—focusing on his daily life, his relationships with those left behind, and his growing alienation due to political turmoil. Adapted from the book Memories of Underdevelopment by Cuban writer Edmundo Desnoes, this subtle and sophisticated film, with its unique narrative technique and occasional use of archival footage, succeeded in drawing the world’s attention to Cuban cinema during its release.
