Beginning her artistic practice as a painter before becoming known for performance and film, Narcisa Hirsch is a pioneering figure in Argentine experimental cinema. Sharing affinities with Maya Deren, another experimental filmmaker featured in this season’s program, Hirsch explores love, the body, women’s experience, death, mourning and memory, reaching into the spaces where the personal intersects with the social. Through images shot on Super 8 and 16 mm that evoke the everyday and the intimate, she creates a distinctive sensory language. Her portraits of intimacy, assembled from her personal archive, feel like audiovisual poems. As part of the main program, we present five shorts from her rich filmography, all screening in Türkiye for the first time.

* Total running time: 87 minutes.

3 – Orpheus and Eurydice (Orfeo y Eurídice)

Director: Narcisa Hirsch

Cast: Rafael Maino

Also known as Rafael, 1976, Orpheus and Eurydice belongs to the same series as Rafael, August 1984 and Rafael 1975, focusing on Hirsch’s relationship with the painter Rafael Maino, her great love. Edited from footage of Hirsch and Maino’s travels in Patagonia, the film filters Christoph Willibald Gluck’s opera based on the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice through Hirsch’s personal perspective, making it an accompaniment to the early warmth of love and intimacy.

“I was very happy with you, and now the reeds bow down over the water. There is no nostalgia.” Rafael, August 1984 is Narcisa Hirsch’s audiovisual love letter to the painter Rafael Maino on his birthday. Bringing together Super 8 footage shot on their travels in Patagonia, she mourns a shared memory and a love that has ended, offering a poignant, sensory look at the years spent together by two people who have now drifted apart.
