Alicia (Ingrid Bergman), regarded with suspicion because of her father’s conviction for treason, falls in love with Devlin (Cary Grant), a charming and enigmatic intelligence agent she meets at a party. After persuading her to work as a spy for the United States, Devlin assigns Alicia a dangerous mission: to seduce an industrialist collaborating with the Nazis and obtain the information sought by the intelligence services.

Both a breathtaking espionage suspense film and a powerful love story, Notorious is widely regarded as a turning point in Hitchcock’s career, marking the moment when the formal and thematic elements that define his cinema reach full maturity. By casting two of Hollywood’s greatest stars, Ingrid Bergman and Cary Grant, in roles audiences were unaccustomed to seeing them play, Hitchcock adds new dimensions to both the atmosphere of suspense and the film’s emotional depth.

Featuring scenes that have become lessons in film history—most famously the extended kissing sequence that outwitted Hollywood’s censorship board—Notorious consistently ranks among the finest works in both Hitchcock’s filmography and the history of cinema.
