McMurphy is an experienced criminal who, when brought before the court after his latest offense, convinces the court that he is mentally ill in order to avoid criminal punishment. However, at the hospital where he is sent, he encounters abuse and humiliation. In this place where even smiling is subject to discipline, McMurphy’s explosive energy clashes with Nurse Ratched’s icy authority. McMurphy, who embodies both joy and rebellion, calls on the patients to rise up against this oppression and its embodiment, Ratched.

Miloš Forman’s adaptation, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, which embodies institutional violence, holds a privileged place in cinema history as one of the rare films to win five major Academy Awards. Close-up faces, suppressed screams, and unexpected silences leave the audience with both cathartic anger and the warm, lasting consolation of solidarity. Born out of the institutional criticism climate of the 1970s, the film reminds us of the price of defending individual dignity and the inner peace it brings.
