Accompanied by a small crew consisting of cinematographer Etienne Becker and sound engineer Jean-Claude Laureux, Louis Malle traveled to India, where he edited the 30 hours of footage they shot into the seven-part documentary Phantom India, which he called “the film I’m most proud of.” Described by Louis Malle as “an unplanned cinematic journey undertaken over several days without a set route,” the film serves as an autobiographical travel diary featuring the director’s own voice and introspective reflections.
