Steven Shorter, the main character of Privilege, one of the inspirations for Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange, is a pop star with thousands of adoring fans. In his private life, this young man is unhappy, indifferent, and never smiles. From his clothing to his stage shows, he is a pawn of a totalitarian government. Shorter is used as a controlled outlet for the rebellion of youth. As a result of political developments in the country, Shorter must transform from a voice of rebellion into a voice of harmony and obedience under the leadership of the church.
Watkins’s only studio film, Privilege, starring musician Paul Jones and supermodel Jean Shrimpton, is a satire based on the idea of war and anti-establishment movements being tamed through popular culture.
During the filming of Privilege, which includes scenes reminiscent of The Beatles’ devoted fans, Watkins wrote a letter to John Lennon reminding him of his “responsibility to use his power for world peace.” The letter, which in Yoko Ono's words “caused a confrontation”, became the inspiration for the Bed-in peace protest.
