Confined to a wheelchair due to a broken leg, photojournalist Jeff spends his days in his New York apartment observing the neighbors who share his courtyard through his camera lens. One day, he begins to suspect that a murder has been committed in the building across from him and becomes obsessively determined to uncover the truth.
Jeff is trapped both within his apartment and within his own surveilling gaze. Through its cinematographic choices, the film also confines the viewer’s perspective to that of the protagonist, thereby exposing cinema’s inherently voyeuristic nature. One of Alfred Hitchcock’s most important films and a canonized classic of film history, Rear Window demonstrates that suspense can be created without action.
Featuring an iconic set design richly detailed with Manhattan apartment life, the film was shot on one of the largest indoor sets ever constructed at the time. The leading roles are played by James Stewart—also known from Rope and Vertigo—and one of the era’s most prominent actresses, Grace Kelly.
