A shy young woman from a modest background,, falls in love with the mysterious yet wealthy Maxim de Winter, whom she meets in Monte Carlo, and the two marry. However, the pervasive presence of Maxim’s former wife Rebecca—whose ghost seems to linger in every corner of Manderley, the estate that has now become the young woman’s home—refuses to loosen its grip.
Successfully adapted from the novel by English author Daphne du Maurier, Rebecca drew considerable attention upon its release for its dramatic structure, which explores the extremes of passion and obsession while sustaining a sense of suspense throughout. In addition to Hitchcock’s masterful control of suspense woven meticulously to the very end, the film also confirms his command of romantic drama. Judith Anderson, who evokes unease from the moment she enters the frame, emerges as the film’s true star with her unforgettable performance as Mrs. Danvers.
Despite having been made in 1940, Rebecca retains its power to captivate contemporary audiences. Hitchcock’s first American production, the film won the Academy Awards for Best Picture and Best Cinematography, from a total of eleven nominations.
