Shadow of a Doubt is known to have been Alfred Hitchcock’s personal favorite among his own films. Starring Academy Award–winning actors Teresa Wright and Joseph Cotten at the height of their careers in 1940s American cinema, the film tells a suspense-driven story grounded in the unsettling idea that evil can emerge from within our immediate surroundings and that the enemy may come from the most unexpected place.

Bored by the stagnation of small-town life, young Charlotte plans to invite her beloved Uncle Charlie to their home in hopes of bringing some excitement into the family’s routine. At that very moment, a telegram arrives announcing that her uncle is coming to visit. Charlotte’s delight at this surprise gradually turns into a mounting nightmare as her uncle’s behavior grows increasingly strange.

Nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, Shadow of a Doubt promises a precisely orchestrated viewing experience, distinguished by Hitchcock’s assured direction, his meticulous attention to visual design and detail, and the suspense he builds step by step.
