Guy, a famous tennis player, strikes up what seems to be an innocent conversation on a train with the smooth-talking Bruno, who already knows who he is. When Guy confesses that he wants to leave his wife but cannot persuade her to agree to a divorce, Bruno—complaining about his domineering father—introduces his theory of the perfect crime: if two strangers commit murders on each other’s behalf, there will be no apparent motive and therefore no way to identify the culprit.
Adapted from the debut novel of Patricia Highsmith, also the author of The Talented Mr. Ripley, Strangers on a Train presents a narrative in which suspense builds gradually through a structure based on oppositions, inviting reflection on guilt and the darker sides of human nature. Featuring memorable performances by Farley Granger and Robert Walker, the film offers a gripping experience from start to finish, as Hitchcock masterfully aligns form and content through his cinematography and editing from the very opening scene.
