The second film by Lisandro Alonso, one of contemporary cinema’s most distinctive directors, The Dead established his international reputation. Its minimalist structure, long takes and direction that blurs the boundaries between fiction and documentary offer an uncompromising viewing experience. The natural world and landscape surrounding its central character are as much protagonists as he is. Following Vargas’s journey after his release from prison, The Dead maps a forgotten, increasingly invisible territory and the harsh conditions of existence within it.
