“This film is about systems: the systems under which we all live and the mechanisms they use to deprive us of information and participation.” The Journey is both one of the most monumental films in cinema history, with a running time of over 14 hours, and one of the most comprehensive works ever made on nuclear armament. Filmed over three years with the help of activist groups around the world, from Norway to Scotland, Tahiti to Mexico, Watkins’s documentary is, in his own words, a narrative about “the systemic impact of the global nuclear regime across twelve countries, building an intricate series of connections between the state of the arms trade, military expenditure, the environment and gender politics”.

The Journey, one of the director's increasingly valued films over the years, uses the long form of cinema to explore the nuclear issue in depth. Challenging the fast pace of the Monoform that hinders understanding, it conveys this subject, which can only be comprehended slowly and thoroughly, as a viewing experience spread over days.
