The Wonders focuses on a family living in the Tuscan countryside who make their living as beekeepers. The eldest daughter, Gelsomina, helps her father and feels the weight of their struggle to make ends meet. An orphaned, mysterious child sent to the farm and Gelsomina’s decision to enter the family into a televised competition where farmers compete for a cash prize will change their lives.
The question at the heart of the director’s cinema, in her own words, “What will we do with a past we are losing day by day?” is felt in The Wonders, as it is in her other films. The film, which depicts the conflict between rural life and modern city life, bears traces of the director’s childhood, as she himself grew up in a family that kept bees in the countryside.
The director, who is no stranger to the themes of Italian Neorealist cinema, established her “magical realist” style in The Wonders, shot on Super 16mm, featuring poetic landscapes and a fairy-tale narrative. The film was awarded the Jury Special Prize at the Cannes Film Festival. Monica Bellucci, who appears at a crucial point in the story, is among the film’s surprises.
