After a traumatic incident while on duty leaves him suffering from acrophobia and vertigo, Scottie Ferguson resigns from the police force and begins working as a private detective. One day, an old college friend asks him to follow his wife, Madeleine. As Scottie sets out to unravel the mystery surrounding this woman, the situation grows increasingly complex and unsettling.

Adapted from the novel D’entre les morts, this film noir–inflected psychological suspense work is today regarded as Hitchcock’s masterpiece. Ranked first in Sight & Sound’s 2012 poll of the greatest films of all time, Vertigo stands out not only for its story, which reveals new layers with each viewing, but also for its expressive use of color and space set against the San Francisco skyline.

Vertigo continues to command attention through its meticulous integration of cinematic elements, from Bernard Herrmann’s score—composed with inspiration from Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde—to the iconic opening titles and poster design by Saul Bass.
