Winner of the Best Foreign Film award at the 31st Venice Film Festival, Wanda is the first and only film directed by actress-turned-director Barbara Loden. Written by Loden and inspired by a news story, it is both a groundbreaking work of American independent cinema and one of the most important examples of feminist filmmaking. Following a working-class woman who leaves her marriage and family behind to travel through remote corners of America, Wanda is regarded as one of the most important films of the 1970s for its personal and political stance.
