Yi Yi: A One and a Two, which won director Edward Yang the “Best Director Award” at the 53rd Cannes Film Festival, delicately presents an intergenerational family story.

The film follows the lives of the Jian family, who live together in the same house in Taipei, Taiwan, but have grown distant from each other. The family members’ lack of communication and loneliness, amidst the loves, uncertainties, and emotional turmoil experienced during childhood, adolescence, and middle age, become even more apparent when their grandmother falls into a coma. When each family member must take turns telling the grandmother something at her sickbed, the family’s ingrained inability to communicate becomes even more distressing.

Yi Yi: A One and a Two conveys the inner turmoil of the family members to the audience through its steady pace, skillful staging, and acting. It succeeds in narrating a cycle passed down from generation to generation in a language that does not fall into banality.

* The film will be screened in a 4K restored copy.
