Lucrecia Martel, the powerful and disruptive voice of Argentine cinema, adapts Antonio di Benedetto’s novel of the same name, Zama, focusing on themes of colonial arrogance and alienation.
Diego de Zama, caught between existential anguish and erotic delusions, is appointed by the crown as a justice of the peace in a Spanish colony in South America in the late 18th century. He awaits news of a more prestigious promotion that will rescue him from his outpost on the Paraguay River, now known as Asunción, and reunite him with his family in Buenos Aires. Trapped in his colonial identity and with his fate tied to a letter from the king, Diego de Zama’s wait turns into hell accompanied by whispers, incomprehensible sentences, and glances.
Zama, which premiered at the 74th Venice International Film Festival, is included in Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s list of 10 films for The New York Times’ poll titled “The Best Films of the 21st Century.”
